Irked by the devastating effects of flood and drought in foreign countries, Senators have called on both federal and state governments to formulate policies that would miligate against the effects of such natural disasters.
The Senators who made far- reaching contributions on a motion in respect of imminent flood and drought in the country said “as representatives we can't fold our hands and allow Nigerians to suffer great loss”.
According to Senator Uche Chukwumerije, lack of early intervention on both flood and drought had made the country to lose millions in terms of human resources.
Senator Chukwumerije pointed out that except urgent and peculiar measures to what he called” warming signs” are taken, the country would continue to face losses in both human and materials resources.
Others described as criminal, the failure on the part of relevant agencies to take urgent measures to miligate against the effects of flood and drought, considering the fact that most rural dwellers are farmers.
In his contributions, Senator Mujitaba Mallam called on government to come up with policies that would miligate against the effects of flood and drought.
Also Senator John Shagaya noted that responses to imminent flood and drought in different parts of the federation had been slow and called for urgent intervention during such events.
This opinion was equally shared by Senator Zaynab Kure who gave an example of what members of her senatorial district had suffered as farmers.
In his contribution, Senator Ayogu Eze also called for urgent intervention as a measure to tackle such natural disasters, contending that the lack of such would defeat government's aim of making food available to Nigerians.
Others who spoke emphasized the need for policies such direction so as to enable relevant agencies to take measures in the face of flood and drought in any part of the country.
