Plot to impeach Gov. Daniel deepens
In spite of his great efforts, Governor Gbenga Daniel is now the target of an impeachment plot by members of the Ogun State House of Assembly.
The Group of 15 (G15) members of the assembly are allegedly now ready to take the step on July 3, according to sources. It was gathered that the legislators will claim to have found massive irregularities in the account of the state as a result of which they will set up a committee to impeach the governor.
The legislators started by rejecting all entreaties and peace overture extended to them by the governor. They consequently took on the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Tunji Akinosi, who replaced Alhaji Waliu Taiwo, whose appointment they took a position against.
They also turned to the appointee of the governor in Ijebu North Local Government, Prince Wale Osiyemi, who was appointed on December 31, 2008, to replace Mr. Tele Ogunjobi.
Before finally passing the infamous resolution 167 in which they asked banks not to honour their financial obligations to the state, they in addition, opposed the bid by Governor Daniel to initiate a N50 billion bond at the Stock Exchange to boost the economic development of the state.
Currently, the legislators claimed to be probing the financial activities of the state government, which is now the plank upon which they want to initiate the impeachment proceedings.
Traditional rulers in the state, led by the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, have called several meetings to placate the legislators to tow the path of peace, but Speaker Tunji Egbetokun is intransigent.
"It will be difficult to get through a kangaroo impeachment at this time. The government of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua is following the rule of law," a political commentator said on the development.
Governor Daniel is said not to be opposed to the searchlight being beamed on his administration as the legislators are doing. but has requested that the proceedings of the House of Assembly during the period should be presented live on radio and television so that the ordinary citizens can follow the event. The legislators have not responded to this proposal yet.
The legislators are believed to be sponsored by a former governor of Ogun State and an ex-governor from a neighbouring state aside others, while the legislators are also being probed by the ICPC on the management of their constituency project fund.
