Privatization: Nigeria’ll benefit immensely

R
ivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said the nation will benefit immensely if the private sector is allowed to run its refineries and other major companies.
Governor Amaechi made the assertion last Wednesday when the House Committee on privatization and Commercialization led by its chairman, Hon. Gida Gella paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt.
Represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, the state chief executive said the success of a business lies on privatization since anyone run by government often fails.
He observed that the economic sector has been on the losing side because government’s attention is always focused on providing social services for the people, pointing out that if the private sector takes over most of government owned companies, the economy will improve tremendously.
Governor Amaechi told the House Committee members that the success of their assignment will greatly impact on the nation’s economy and enjoined them to put in place a legal framework that will strengthen the economic sector and the privatization process.
Earlier, the leader of the team, Honourable Gida Gella had said that the committee was in the state on an oversight function to assess the operations of private and public companies with a view to formulating a general principle on national endowment.
Honourable Gella decried the country’s over dependence on oil and stressed the need for diversification.
