By Sammy Nwogu
The Presidential committee on customs reform has promised to do all it could to remove impediments in the service.
The committee which was in Kano recently to ascertain decay in the level of Nigeria customs service commended COTECNA Destination Inspection Limited for its quality scanning services but decried the dilapidation in most of its ware houses, saying that such a situation would not be acceptable to the committee.
The leader of the delegation and former Comptroller-General of Customs, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyi Mustapha, said the committee would also transform customs to be IT-complaint and have ware houses of global standard. As part of its reform objectives, importers would have a quick clearing system to avoid congestion, he said.
At the customs training school, the committee expressed dismay at the untidy situation of the classrooms with corrugated zinc, while the internet service was not functioning.
However, the comptroller of the college, Alhaji Ali Wakili said they would do their best to bring the school to acceptable standard.
He said that they have asked the contractors handling rehabilitation work on the place to ensure that they worked fast and provide facilities that would improve learning condition in the place.
He said the committee has given them one week within which to address all such problems mainly caused by rain.
The client relations manager of the COTECNA service providers, Aminu Mohammed said they are operating in Kano and Abuja international airports and were trying to give better scanning systems in the places.
