16 parties to contest councillorship bye-election in Opobo/Nkoro



Sixteen political parties are to contest the councillorship bye-election in Ukonu ward four of Opobo/Nkoro local government area.
A statement issued by Hon. Nimi Walson-Jack, Commissioner-in-charge of Public Affairs and Civic Education of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) stated that the bye-election, which comes up on 23rd of January 2010 is to fill the vacancy created by the unfortunate death of Hon. Adasa Henderson Jim Wariso who represented ward four in the local government before his death.
Walson-Jack urged the political parties namely Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPCN), African Liberation Party (ACP), African Renaissance Party (ARP), Citizens Popular Party (CCP), Liberal Democracy Party of Nigeria (LAPN), Movement for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy (MRDD), National Action Council (NAC), National Democratic Party (NDP), Nigerian Advance Party (NAP), Nigeria Elements Progressive Party (NEPP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Progressive Party (PPP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and United Democratic Party (UDP) to forward the venue of their primaries to the commission immediately.
The RSIEC Commissioner in charge of Public Affairs and Education revealed that primaries of political parties for the nomination of candidates shall be held on Saturday 19th December, 2009, at venues within the ward, between the hours of 10: am and 2: pm.
RSIEC reminded political parties that only those selected or nominated by the political parties that only those selected or nominated by the political parties in accordance with their respective constitutions and a t primaries monitored and supervised by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) will be accepted as candidates for the bye-election.
